Starburst Stains and Wood

DSC_0478

I love it when my kids can create a craft project all on their own. My 7 year old daughter has been hankerin’ to paint this mini rocking chair ever since we got it. I’ve been a little distracted with the post-Christmas clean-up and really didn’t want to haul out all the acrylic paints and have her mix everything into one glorious shade of poo brown. Lindy’s Starburst Stains to the rescue! The chair is an unfinished wood piece, from the craft store, so the stains soak into the wood beautifully. And the more they overlap and build up, the prettier they get. We did step outside onto the covered porch to do the spritzing, so I didn’t have to worry too much about overspray – I just set the chair in a cardboard box to protect the deck floor. After a few minutes the spray was dry, so my daughter was able to start on the white paint dots right away. I just poured a puddle of acrylic paint onto a scrap of paper and she used the handle end of a paint brush to dip-n-dot. Now I want a full-size chair just for me!

On another note, if you’re buried in snow (like I am today), aren’t you glad you don’t have to leave your house to watch my live Fabulously Artsy show tonight? I’ve been on Holiday Hiatus for two weeks, so I’ve missed everyone! Hope to see you there!

School Christmas Craft Project

Just a few more days until Christmas, and I’m in the home stretch. Still crazy busy with gifts, food and house cleaning, but I thought I’d take a minute to share the craft project I provided for my son’s middle school Christmas Craft day. The kids visited classrooms on a rotating basis throughout the day, and had 45 minutes to create each project they had signed up for. In my class they made photo keychains. I printed hundreds of small sized photos in a variety of subjects, from popular movies to sports to animals. The kids cut their choice of photo to size, trimmed it very carefully and attached it to a silver dog tag.

The next step involved pouring epoxy resin on the tags, which is highly toxic and should not be done around middle school monkeys, so I completed the tags at home and brought them back for the kids to pick up. They were thrilled with the results! Hopefully some of these will make it under the tree as Christmas gifts this year.

A simple snowman card with twilight blue and chocolate brown. I used cranberry red for a festive accent color. And of course a bit of bling with Glitz gel. Happy Holidays!

MacGyver Christmas Decorating

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Decking the halls sometimes takes a little creative tinkering, especially if you want to be able to UN-decorate without leaving a permanent reminder of your festive display.

christmas mantle

You may remember that I recently re-painted my living room mantel and there is no way I’m going to risk putting nails into this pristine white surface. Attaching the garland and the stockings seemed a bit tricky… until I channeled my inner MacGyver and raided my sewing stash.

Enter the ball head straight pin.

I inserted a row of pins where the mantel meets the wall, then used fishing line to attach the garland, lights and stockings. By placing the pins every ten inches or so, the weight of the hanging items could be evenly distributed. Of course, when Santa fills the stockings he’ll have to snip the line so the stockings don’t fall down with the extra weight. (All that coal for my naughty kids is pretty heavy.)

Next, I hung snowflakes from the ceiling using the same pins, with white heads. Betcha can’t see the pins at all.

Well, not chicken. But nothing cute rhymes with “Resin Pendant.”

For the secret give-away contest, ustream viewers left a comment on my Plenty for Twenty post below. I’m giving away a pendant similar to the one I made in the ustream class. I don’t have pictures yet, so stay tuned for photos coming soon!

Mystery of the Missing Stamp

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Last night’s ustream class was a lot of fun with a couple of quick and simple cards. I demonstrated a neat-o technique, how to add color and sparkle to Liquid Glass.

Pretty quick Cards!

If you tuned in last night, perhaps you might remember me fretting about a lost stamp. I had it all ready to go, stuck it on the block and everything. Despite my best laid plans, the stamp just wasn’t anywhere to be found. I had to make do without, but it was driving me crazy and as soon as I finished the show I looked everywhere on my worktable, even on the floor. No luck. Woke up still thinking about that darned stamp.

Then I watched my show.

Um…. I found the stamp. missing stamp CU

Tune in next week for the Fabulously Forgetful show.

On another note, you may notice my blog is looking a little naked. The background is gone for a bit, I'm getting ready for a make-over. Good news, bare naked blogs tend to load faster, so there's always that. (Now thinking I probably shouldn't have said naked in this post, I can just imagine all the spam that my inbox will now be receiving.)
