Make A Wish Album

Monday, August 8, 2011

I’d like to introduce you to a piece of artwork that consumed my life for weeks.
wishes-2
Close to My Heart holds an album contest every year for national convention. This year’s theme was “Wishes”. Entries could interpret this theme in any way they chose.
There were a few specific rules to make the competition a bit more interesting and challenge those who entered. One layout with no photos, an interactive element, five pages or longer, and so forth. And get this… one layout with glitter. Yeah, right.... as if I’d have a hard time with that one.)
wishes-5
I rolled the idea of “Wishes” around in my head for quite a while. I think it may have been a few weeks, maybe even a month. I do that: it’s called incubating. So when I look like I’m doing nothin’, I can say “leave me alone, I’m incubating.”
The idea came to me when I thought about how often my kids have asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I realized it’s a story that changes as we grow from a child to an adult. Since it’s a story that my children ask about, I’d make a book that they’d want to read, over and over.
wishes-31
I was so excited with this idea, I had to call my husband at work and tell him. His answer…. “That’s nice honey. Have fun.” Okay, so he didn’t really get the concept, but I knew I had something.
wishes-14
The completion of the book took about two weeks, and I put everything on hold to work like a crazy woman. I can never thank my family enough for giving me the time and space to create this album.

I finished with less than one hour to get the album boxed and off to the post office. The album had to be shipped to Close to My Heart’s corporate offices more than a month before convention. I did take the time to quickly video tape the entire book before shipping it off. Thank goodness I did, because I filmed it before adding page protectors and now it would be impossible to film with the glare of the protectors, and many of the pages cannot be removed from the protectors now. Although the hurried film-making wasn’t my best work, I hope you’ll forgive the shadows and shaky camera work.
wishes-19
Convention was a whirlwind, and we had to wait through several nail-biting days to find out the winner. When they announced my name I was a weepy mess, for some reason all the excitement and anticipation overwhelmed me and I wailed my way up to the stage accept the first prize award.
I think that the album is best shown in action, so today I’m sharing the video I created of my storybook. Even convention attendees did not see the book this way, since the albums were displayed on a wall with all pages viewable at once.
I will have more photos of the album later this week, including photos of the full pages, but first I’d like you to experience it as a reader.
To watch on a larger screen, double click on the video below to go to youtube. Then click the full screen button on the lower right side (four arrows pointing outward).
Enjoy!

WOW Tresa, I never imagined your pages had more than I saw at convention. I was very taken with your album at convention.....the pop ups and embellishments were phenomenal. I took a quick look at pages several times, but waited until one quiet evening to take everything in.

It was very, very hard to resist the urge to touch your pages....like an oil painting with different dimensions of paint. I did resist, which is why your video really brought your pages to life, for me.

Thank you for being such an inspiration and always being quick to share it with us.
