Toasted Peeps, with a Color Lesson

toasted peeps left

Last year our family went camping over Easter weekend. The Easter bunny followed us, and left plastic eggs in the forest and baskets of goodies for the kids. We discovered a delicious treat…. marshmallow peeps toasted over a campfire. Mmmmm… carmelized sugar never tasted so good.

toasted peeps right

How about a little scrapbooking lesson on pulling color to customize a layout? If you look at my photos, there is nothing that looks spring-timey or flowery in the least bit. We were camping, so the colors are dark with browns and greens, lots of dirt and wood. If you are trying to coordinate your pictures to your paper, your first thought would be to pick a more outdoorsy theme.

But wait! It’s about Easter and peeps, so why can’t I have flowers and pink paper? As my husband says: “Nobody tells me what to do, not even ME!”

The key is how to pull it all together.

Here’s the layout, as it started out. This was the design that my students created in my March classes.

sophia layout Sorry ‘bout the big “crease”, I scanned the pages and pieced them together.

Anyhoo,  this is a darling color combo from the Sophia paper pack, but it’s just washed out when I plop down those dark camping photos.

The yellow of the peeps is the reason that these photos WILL work, since it is repeated in small amounts in the layout above. And since the layout isn’t so much about camping as it is about Easter in the woods and toasted peeps, I want the peeps to POP!

But it’s not enough to pull the entire layout together. The bold answer: black. I needed a color that was repeated in the photos to add as accents to my layout, without dramatically changing the look and feel of a spring-time theme.

Toasted Peeps

By adding a small amount of  black with the title and journaling, a few stamped black accents (stitching below the lower left photo, swirl in the upper right embellishment cluster) plus a row of black mini brads, it pulls the photos and page together so your eye sees the entire layout as one element.

So, don’t be afraid to go with color and theme first, then tie in the photos with a coordinating color accent.

Stop Staring and Start Scrapbooking

smile and wave-1

I don’t think of myself as a perfectionist…. far from it. But I consider myself a “hesitant scrapbooker".

I overthink, procrastinate and make excuses. I don’t have the right photos, I can’t remember the date, I don’t have the perfect paper.

smile and wave

May is National Scrapbooking Month. I am vowing to move forward and get over it. Case in point: not-so-great pictures and not-sure-of the date.

I had these photos developed a few years ago, and they’ve been waiting in my “to scrapbook” pile. I sift through this pile occasionally and set them aside every time. The photos are taken at an indoor waterpark with terrible lighting, a point-n-shoot camera, and I don’t remember the exact year. I quizzed my husband and kids, none of us can remember which birthday this was… “was it your 7th birthday, 8th?”.

smile and waveleft

I could keep setting the pictures aside, or I could get on with it. I could scan the photo, manipulate it digitally to improve the lighting, or I could get on with it. I could go back through all my negatives and find the date… or I could get on with it.

smile and waveright-1

Now, I have a layout and I don’t have a random pile of pictures to puzzle over. I don’t have a date, and I don’t have great pictures. But I remember the joy of watching my son spend the entire day in the wave pool, hitting the waves head-on, big grin plastered all over his face.

Hesitant Scrapper? Stop staring and start scrapbooking.

Leave a comment and tell me your success story. What have you done to become a more confident scrapbooker? Baby steps or giant strides, what works for you?

Goodbye to my sweet Rudy

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

rudy and jessica

On May 1st we said goodbye to our gentle spirited dog, Rudy.

We adopted him from the American Brittany Rescue in December 2007. It’s hard to believe that it has been only three and a half years, he’s become such a permanent part of my heart.

DSC_0403-1

Rudy was 7 when he came to us, already a middle-aged dog and not a prime candidate for adoption. He was also not a hunting dog, or even a typical high-energy Brittany. What he was: perfect for our family. He did not bark, jump on people, dig, or chew. He only wanted to snuggle up for a good ear scratching and curl up at your feet for a nap. He was the most gentle dog I have ever known.

DSC_0230-2

I’m still grieving, more than I expected. We knew that he was reaching the end of his life, with his old age and failing health.  But you can never be prepared for how much your heart breaks when you lose a part of your family.

Waiting at the Gate of Heaven
by Emery Villeneuve

From the place where He sees all, God noticed the dog sitting just outside Heaven, anxiously watching the road leading to The Gate. "You may enter at any time" God told the creature.
"I am waiting for my master" replied the dog. "He won't be along for a very long time" God answered, " Come in and enjoy Heaven until then." "No thank you" said the dog, "I'll wait, I want to be by his side when he arrives so we can go in together." God touched the dog gently and said "If there is anything you need in the meantime don't hesitate to ask." But the dog said nothing for its attention had turned once again to the road watching hopefully for the soul it loved so well.
