Oh So Flirty

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Another handpainted card, using Flirty paper pack and Love Blooms stamp set.

You’d think I’d get tired of using the same products, but actually no. I love taking the same products and giving it a different look.

That, or I’m just too lazy to clear off my worktable and get out new stuff. You decide.

Artwork For Your Feet

Monday, August 27, 2012

I’ve got crafty kids, that’s for sure. They all have their own creative streak, and my oldest daughter Melissa is no exception. The wait-list for her custom painted shoes was a month or more.

Melissa is getting ready to move to Seattle, and while she’s had her own place for a while, she’s never moved so far away from our family before. I’m nervous and excited for her at the same time.

Melissa won’t be painting shoes for a while, but she has two last pair that are still available for sale. You can purchase them right here on my blog using the Buy Now buttons below. Handpainting Video Tutorial

Friday, August 24, 2012

My goodness it’s been a long time coming, but I finally have a new video!

I adore the hand-drawn look of the stamp set Love Blooms. It comes with stamps that will “fill in” the color for you, but I wanted to show a different way to use the set and create a handpainted watercolor look.

This is a perfect set for this technique. In fact, it’s probably impossible to mess it up. Don’t agonize over every brushstroke, just have fun and get painting!

Watch the tutorial below.

The Artiste collection is just $99*, and this month only I’m adding a free Workshop on the Go kit to make the deal even sweeter!

Big and Beautiful

This flower is HOT!

Well, at least while I was making it. See, it’s a singed flower, which uses an open flame from a candle in order to get those deep, dimensional petals.

I used the new Close to My Heart Slate Satin Polka Dot ribbon and a wee bit of the Black Tulle Ribbon to create this eye-catching embellishment. You can find the link to a (rather long, sorry) video on the singed flower technique here.

If you love color, you’ll love the new Flirty paper pack by Close to my Heart. It’s packed with an array of contemporary colors in a perfectly coordinated palette of deep honey, mellow orange, intense raspberry and velvety greens.

CTMH brings these fabulous colors to you in the Flirty paper pack:
Flirty Raspberry
Flirty Yellow
New England Ivy
Ponderosa Pine

Talk about trendy!
Yes, let’s talk about color trends, shall we?

One of the reasons I so-so-so love Close to My Heart, is their ability to follow the popular trends yet still stay true to those who love the predictability of a stable stock of inventory.

Debuting the new Fall/Winter 2012 CTMH catalog, you’ll find three new paper packs that feature “Trend Colors.” Flirty, Avonlea and La Belle Vie paper packs have two or more limited edition colors added to their exclusive 40 color palette.

These limited edition Trend Colors are only available in their featured paper pack, and they are only included as cardstock, AND they are only available during the life of the catalog.

These colors are fabulous and fun, but they are trendy, so CTMH has devised a way to bring you the latest and greatest, without changing their tried and true color palettes.

Each new catalog, you’ll see new Trend Color paper packs introduced, so you have just 6 months to order and enjoy the Trend Color papers in Flirty, Avonlea and La Belle Vie, and then you’ll be ready for your newest flavor of Trend Colors in the next CTMH catalog.

While these special paper packs are perfectly coordinated, The Trend Colors are only available in cardstock, included in each of the three featured paper packs. What about stamp pads, or markers or extra papers?

Have no fear, I’m here to help.

See, I love to coordinate color. I say coordinate, because we’re not matching exactly. That’s a little boring, isn’t it? In the old days, your shoes had to match your bag, but we’re way past that. As long as your colors coordinate and complement, they are much more interesting than a limited palette of two or three exactly matching hues.

Free Color Confidence Download
I have created a three page PDF file with color suggestions to coordinate with Flirty, Avonlea and La Belle Vie. These files are free for you to download, use and share. You’ll find the link at the bottom of this post.

Each of the files will show you the original paper pack colors, with limited edition Trend Colors marked. I created a coordinating palette using colors that are available in cardstock 24 packs, inkpads and markers. By using this palette you can expand your paper pack, or add additional color with stamps and markers.

In addition to the coordinating palette, you can take your artwork to the next color level by using my Step It Up Color Palette suggestions. Choose one, two or more of these colors for an alternative look or a dramatic pop of color when needed.

Now I know this has been a long post, so I thank you for sticking with me as I explained all about CTMH’s Trend colors. If you’re still with me, take a look at another card I created with the Flirty Paper pack, using the exact same papers in both cards.

I included these two Flirty patterned papers,

bulk color flirty

and added three additional choices from my Coordinating and the Step It Up palette.

Q: When is a Ribbon not a Ribbon?

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

A. When you use it like paper!

Boys and ribbons. Not always something that goes hand in hand. But I love this new Slate Satin Polka Dot ribbon so much, and it goes so perfectly with the Avonlea paper pack, so I just had to use it!

First, a traditional approach, with a notched edge and machine stitching.

I always like to repeat my elements in a layout, so did you catch the second place I used the same ribbon?

Yep, hiding in this array of patterned paper strips! The satin shimmer adds a unique texture, but by using it flat it blends in with the rest of the layout.

Looking for more ways to incorporate ribbon into a masculine layout? Try knotting the ribbon, or attaching flat pieces with brads or staples.
