Creative University Registration Now Open

Sunday, September 30, 2012

I can’t believe that Creative University is 6 years old! Seems like just yesterday when I hosted my first art retreat with just over twenty amazing women attending.

It’s grown over the years, and just like our creative spirit, CU is always evolving. Create U now accepts 60 students that will enjoy an all-inclusive event with hands-on creative classes in several mediums, self-paced make-n-takes and a healthy dose of mojo-boosting inspiration.

If you’d like to feel as relaxed and happy as these lovely ladies from last year’s retreat, you’ll want to hurry and reserve your space for Creative University 2013. Pre-registration for alumni has filled half the spots, so it may sell out in just a couple of days!

To learn all the important details about CU, like dates, prices, location and what to expect, please visit the Creative University website.

Hope to see you at CU!

Stepping it Up with Color and Layers

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

If you’re following along this week, you’ll remember the quick n’ simple (but not too plain) card from the last two posts. Scroll up or click here to see the card.

Using the same design, colors and stamp set, I wanted to take it up a step and add more complexity to the card.

I introduced a border stamp and accented the sentiment with shapes cut from Cricut Art Philosophy, then added sparkle with the self-adhesive Silver Shimmer Trim by Close to My Heart.

When you’ve got a design that’s working for you, don’t be afraid to experiment with additional elements and recreate the project in different ways. Or as my little birdie friend would say: “Tweet Tweet, repeat!”

Do-Over, take two

Monday, September 17, 2012

If you read yesterday’s post, you learned that it sometimes takes more than one try to get something right.

I have a confession. I wasn’t too thrilled with the photo of my card. I was in a hurry and the lighting wasn’t that great, and even with some basic touch-ups in Picasa I was not a happy stamper. Excuses, excuses.

I stewed about it all night. Yes, I do that. Worry about a single photo on my blog, ‘cuz I love my readers so much I don’t want them to see a less than lovely presentation.

So let’s try that photo shoot again, shall we?

The Power of the Do-Over

DSC_1034-003

There are times you need a quick and simple card, but you still want it to reflect your artistic style. And sometimes, it takes a few tries to get it right. Behold the power of the Do-Over.

Let me tell you the tale of this deceptively simple card design….

I sometimes struggle to create a quick design that doesn’t take multiple layers, special techniques and fancy embellishments. I chose purple, green and tan as my color palette. I created a few “duds” while working up this card until I finally got one to click.

Version #1 was on a white card base. Looked a little too stark and inking the edges just made it look dingy.

Version #2 I switched to a colonial white card base, the inked edges looked great, but I stamped my little birdy in cashmere ink and he just looked a bit too plain.

Finally, version #3 had everything I wanted. I used the “rock and roll” technique to create the two-toned bird. I blinged it up with some Stardust Glitz Glitter Gel on the branches and backed the rhinestone accents with Olive cardstock circles (punched using a standard office hole-punch).

A little bit of technique, a little bit of sparkle, and a card I can make in minutes. Now you’re talking!

I love videos. I am visual and verbal so it’s the best of both worlds for me.

I’m also impatient, so a video has to grab me from the start and keep me interested, or I’m off to watch something else.

The video from Close to My Heart corporate (below) is perfect. Valuable information and to-the-point delivery. Doesn’t hurt that Christine and Monica are amazing presenters and truly genuine people who love Close to My Heart products.
