Top 12 in 2012

Another year draws to a close, and it’s time to look back and remember those special memories that make me love creating, blogging, and sharing.

My random list of best, favorite, most memorable blog moments of 2012.

1. Most pinned: If it fits, it ships. I had no idea such a quick blog post would be shared by thousands of viewers. I’m so glad my worn-out Fiskars cutter is now gracing the boards of so many pinners out there. At least I had the presence of mind to don my fabulous vintage bracelet.

2. Most delicious fake food: Sweet Cupcake Card. Oh yes, you know you want to lick that card.

3. Favorite new CTMH product: Hands down, Burlap Ribbon takes the prize for me. Pleat it, tie it, cut it, wrap it. Oh the possibilities!

4. Biggest regret: realizing that I only made one video in 2012. Wait, really? That can’t be right.
Um… yeah.
I’ll try to do better in 2013, honestly I will.

5. Getting treated like a celebrity: CTMH corporate knows how to show a girl a good time. I was lucky enough to be participate in a consultant promotional video filming, it was a wonderful experience and all of the CTMH staff couldn’t have been nicer!

6. Overwhelmed, but in a good way: Shortly after releasing my Footloose scrapbooking workshop, CTMH unexpectedly sold out of the Footloose paper pack. Now, I don’t know if it was my workshop that caused it, but I like to think I might have had something to do with it. Hundreds of consultants purchased the kit to teach to their customers, so I’m guessing they might have sold an awful lot of Footloose paper packs. If you missed this workshop, I plan to have another this coming spring.

7. Cutest craft ever: Magical mushroom charms for Creative University charm swap. Sweet and petite.

8. Trying my hand at Memes: Oh Ryan, your love for CTMH is adorable.

And everyone is more interesting with glitter.

9. My most favorite bird. It would be interesting to count how often you see me use this bird stamp from A Tweet. I think I’ve gotten my money’s worth on this little $6.95 set.
heartfelt wishes

10. Best use of a trash item: You know those little desiccant packs that come in packaged goods? The little beads are quite useful when you need a little something shiny. Just remember the warning, do not eat your project after applying desiccant beads. I’m not sure why you would, but consider yourself warned.

11. No-Brainer Crafting: Any can do this. Open jar, throw in rocks, moss, sticks and butterflies. Close jar. Bam… done. You’re welcome.

12. I look good in a ‘stache. It makes me so much more sophisticated, don’t you think?P7110559

Wishing you a fabulous, funny, and creative new year!

Close to My Heart’s January Stamp of the Month, “Happy Valentine’s” is for all you floral lovers. Gorgeous roses and sentiments, the set is just $5 when you place a minimum $50 order on my website in January only. I love the woodcut look of the flowers, the style lends itself to so many different techniques, from rustic to elegant.

I used Lindy’s Stamp Gang Starburst Spray in Jazzy Jivin’ Purple. It looks absolutely stunning with CTMH Juniper, Slate and Whisper. Try as I might, I just couldn’t capture the beautiful shimmer of bronze-gold in this LSG spray. I blame our cold and gloomy Spokane winter day. I like to photograph in natural light and the weather just wasn’t cooperating. I have a couple more cards in the works using this set and perhaps ol’ mister sunshine will pop out just for my next photo session, just so you can enjoy the shimmery goodness of Lindy’s Starburst Sprays.

When life gives you squishy fudge….

Saturday, December 22, 2012

I make a lot of homemade treats at Christmas. From nuts to soup. Really, soup. I make it in batches, freeze in portions and fill my mother’s freezer.
Candy is another big favorite, but it can be tricky. Especially when you’re in a rush and it’s late at night and you don’t write down the recipe correctly. You end up with squishy fudge.
No worries… scoop it into balls and dip in chocolate. Heavenly truffles to die for. Yeah, I can make mistakes, but I can roll with it.
DSC_1062
Microwave Fudge
4 cups Chocolate Chips (2 bags)
(to make squishy fudge for truffles, use 3 cups chips)
14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup butter
dash of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine all ingredients except vanilla. Microwave 2 minutes, stir well. Microwave again at 30 second intervals, stirring each time until completely melted. Stir in vanilla. Pour into foil-lined 8x8” pan. Cool completely, cut into squares.
For truffles: after cooling, scoop into balls and roll with hands. Melt dipping chocolate. Place rolled centers in freezer for 5-10 minutes prior to dipping. (I like to work with batches at a time, so they don’t thaw while dipping). Dip into melted chocolate, place on parchment paper to cool.

peace

Every year I start out the Christmas season with excitement and anticipation of the approaching holiday. Then the weeks begin to speed by in a blur, and suddenly it’s just days away and I’m caught up in the rush of buying, baking, decorating and wrapping.

When I’m feeling like a grinch and bah-humbugging about my huge list of things to do, I know it’s time to take a moment and remember the reason for the season.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
peace closeupI know your plates are probably as full as mine in these last days before Christmas, so I wish you peace, dear reader. Enjoy and live in the moment, create treasured memories…. and if every item on our to-do list doesn’t get done, no one but you and I will know.

Santa Baby

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

This photo and story has captured my heart! You may have already seen it on facebook, but just in case, it’s too good not to pass it along…..

Sarah Pasley

Sarah Pasley of Meridian shared the following story on Facebook on the baby clothing store Carters Facebook page.

"My mother and I had braved the mall (on a Saturday in December of all days) in hopes of capturing a picture of my 8 month old son, Kiptyn "meeting" Santa.

"We stood in line for over 30 minutes waiting for our turn. Of course, 5 mins before our turn to meet Santa, Kiptyn fell asleep!! Part of me thought we should just get out of line & avoid wasting anyone else's time that busy Saturday, but as we went to leave Santa gestured us over. I handed Kiptyn to my Mom & grabbed my camera. "

"I was escorted outside of the fenced area in order to snap my own shots. What happened next will be one of my all time favorite memories of Christmas... Santa grabbed his book & slowly laid back into his oversized chair. He then silently motioned for my Mom to lay Kiptyn on his stomach. Kiptyn stirred for a moment and I thought he'd wake for sure. "

"Santa hushed him & Kiptyn's little arms fell into such a peaceful position. After we finished taking pictures we heard a round of applause from the crowd that had gathered around below & above in the rotunda. I just wish this jolly ol' man could know how truly special he is. I can honestly say that I believe in Santa and the magic of the holiday season again. I'd just like for everyone to see how special the Santa at the Boise Towne Square mall really is. "

I used the Close To My Heart Cricut Artiste Cartridge to create this modern color-blocked swing card. I was inspired by the colors on this card, by Lynn Putt.

A swing card has a z-fold, with a center cut shape. It looks complicated, but it’s a breeze to make… when all the cutting is done by the Artiste cartridge. I chose the round center, but there are several versions on this cartridge, so you can pick square, scalloped, oval or more.

It’s a tag? It’s a card? It’s both!

tag card

I wanted to come up with a clever combined name for a papercrafted creation that can be used as a tag and as a card. But cag sound weird. And tard is just plain wrong.

tag card open

Whatever you call it, I like the idea of having something that can fit into a standard card envelope but you can use it for a nice big gift tag too. Either way, whipping up a few to have on hand would definitely be a good idea!

steep n deep

Post #2 of my 12 posts of Christmas.

One of the reasons I’ve been so busy lately, is that I’m now attending school as an aide to my son Richard, who has Asperger’s syndrome. He’s a great kid, although his Asperger’s makes it difficult for him to keep up with the rigors of school life, and traditional school hasn’t been successful for us. I love the school he attends now, with a project-based curriculum. I’m blessed to be able to spend so much time with my son and make a difference in his education.

Field trips are common at City School, and it’s always fun to be out and about with the kids. I created this scrapbook layout about the science class trip to Deep Creek, to study geology.

DSC_1065

While this layout isn’t about Christmas, the snowflake theme would be perfect for a snowy holiday page. I used Avonlea paper pack, plus Desert Sand, Ruby and Cocoa cardstock.

12 Posts of Christmas

Saturday, December 1, 2012

You’ve probably noticed I’ve been a little out of touch with my blog in the past few months. Sometimes blogging is like life, there are times when it comes easily and everything falls into place, then there are times when it doesn’t.

So how do you get out of a blogging slump? Set a deadline and stick with it!

This month, I’m making a  goal to triple the number of posts I created in each of the last two months. That’s twelve posts, and I’m excited to get some crafty mojo going right here on Fabulously Artsy.
So, let’s get this (posting) party started!
DSC_1061

This card is one of three projects that my Creative University students created along with me during my live online make-n-take class. Live classes are always a hoot, where everyone can see all the goofy mistakes I make (like losing a snowflake piece, looking all over and finally having one someone in the chatroom point out it was right in front of me!)
