Hello World

Monday, July 22, 2013

Time to share some more artwork from my extravaganza class at Close to My Heart’s national convention. I received the ProPlayer paper pack, which has a bold, dark color scheme of red, blue and grey and features plenty of hi-tech images for gamers and computer references. I don’t always stick with the established color scheme in a paper pack, so I substituted Lagoon cardstock for the deep blue hues of Pacifica and Outdoor denim in this paper pack.

Sometimes I can be inspired by the theme of a paper pack as much as the color. The grey B&T patterned paper in this kit is loaded with computer code text, and it made me think of all the ways that computers have become such a huge part of our lives.

I am constantly amazed at the technology at our fingertips, and you may have read my post about my infatuation with google street view maps. Why not share my love of armchair traveling with the world, by creating a scrapbook page about it?

My journaling:
”I am not a world traveler, but I have been all over the world. Thanks to technology, I can drive the city streets of Paris, take a hike around Stonehenge, or stroll a beach in Hawaii. Google maps with street view is one of my favorite discoveries on the internet. Sometimes I use street view for mundane reasons. When I need to drive to a new destination in town, I use it to familiarize myself with the area so I don’t make a wrong turn. But when I’m feeling adventurous, I can take a trip across the country or even around the world.

There’s something about being immersed into the place you’re viewing, driving down backstreets and tunnels, or even following footpaths, with a 360 degree view of everything around you. Feels just like you’re there. For someone who is a definite homebody, google street view is my window to the world.”

Naples, Italy

One of my favorite discoveries on a “trip” around Naples, Italy (above), this bit of graffiti. Could it be any more perfect?

How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world. I like to think they left that message just for me.

Now you tell me… what technology item is your favorite? Something you can’t live without, or just something you love to to use? Leave me a comment and let me know, then consider making a scrapbook page about it!

Flip it, Flop it! Work that Sketch!

Card Sketch
Stuck for ideas? Try a sketch!

Working with sketches is a huge time-saver. You can create endless options by substituting patterns, colors and embellishments, but the sketch will guide you on design and placement so you save steps in the design process.

Sketches can be followed exactly, as I did in the card above. But don’t think you have to stick with the sketch as-is. Get more mileage from a single sketch by changing the orientation.

I created three total cards with one sketch, just by rotating the design. In the card above I turned the sketch on its head, rotating 180 degrees. Below, I created a horizontal card with a quarter-turn and repositioning the accent pieces in the corner.

Since I didn’t move any of the major elements on the design, the balance and flow of the design stayed intact. Changing the orientation is a quick and easy way to really work that sketch!

Save my sketch above by using the “pin it” button or right clicking and saving the image to your computer. If you create your own version of my card sketch and post it online, leave me a comment below with the address of your card. I love to see my reader’s artwork!

TY trio
Last month I shared a card sketch for my birthday linky party. Six talented artists entered their beautiful creations. I loved them all! By random drawing, entry #4 will be receiving all three of these cards. Thanks Shirley for joining my party!

game face

If you’ve got gamers, you’ll love ProPlayer Paper Packet! This paper is full of bold and masculine patterns in Black, Slate, Pacifica and Ruby. You can purchase this paper beginning Aug. 1 on my website.

I wanted to play up the hi-tech, yet grungy look for this paper pack. I love the dimensional look of chipboard letters but wanted to avoid the resist pattern on the houndstooth alphabet. It was easy to change the letters with versamark inkpad and silver embossing powder. The pattern still slightly shows through, but more muted than if I had just used an inkpad and sponge to color the letters.

Wait, you’ve got girl gamers, you say? No problem! Red, grey and blue colors are versatile and unisex, so you can scrapbook your husband, sons, daughters and yourself!

CTMH Convention 2013

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

What a fabulous time I had in Orlando, Florida at the Close to My Heart annual convention! DSC_1200

We stayed at the beautiful Coronado Springs resort. It really felt like a resort, with the charming south-of-the-border style buildings and extensive gardens and walking paths.

Disney world

Close to My Heart was generous enough to give every attending consultant a twilight pass to a Disney park of our choice, and I also stayed one extra day, so I was able to enjoy two visits to the Disney theme parks!

It wasn’t all parks and vacation, convention is also about learning and teaching. I was lucky enough to be chosen again to teach extravaganza, a huge undertaking but I love sharing with my fellow CTMH sisters.

Thanks to Haley Bell Dyer for taking my photo during my presentation.

I was assigned the new paper pack, ProPlayer. If you’ve been wishing for a masculine teen paper pack, this is the one for you. In my class I focused on expanding a limited color palette with color theory and theme selection. I’ll be sharing lots of my artwork from my class in upcoming blog posts.

Here is one of the cards I created for my class display, using ProPlayer paper. You’ll be able to start ordering this new paper pack beginning on August 1.

You Me

Big news! There will also be a new exclusive Close to My Heart Cricut Cartridge available next month. The Cricut Artbooking Collection will take your scrapbooking to new levels with layouts and mini albums that you can create with just a single key and dial size. I received this cartridge to create my extravaganza artwork and I have to tell you, it’s amazing! I’ll be offering a pre-order special on this new cartridge, so check back next week for more details.
