The Art of the Imperfect

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

For today’s Whatever Wednesday post, I’m sharing a video of Phil Hansen, an artist who embraced his disability and proves that creativity can be enhanced by limitations.

If you’re stuck in a creative rut, and your mojo is lacking, give yourself a challenge. Some ideas to try:

* Create a scrapbook page in a set amount of time (30 minutes, one hour).
* Design a card using a monochromatic color scheme.
* Pick three papers from separate kits and combine them into one project.

For more ideas, search online for websites and online articles devoted to papercrafting challenges.

I also really love Hansen’s videos documenting the creation of his art. Which, if you think about it, is the reason that so many people have enjoyed watching my videos on youtube and ustream. I have found that the process of creation is appealing to the viewer as much as the finished product.

Card plus a Sketch

happy thoughts

A quick and easy card, plus the sketch for you to pin!

I love distressing paper, and most of my creations have at least a touch of inking or sanding, but this card has not one bit of it! Gasp! I wanted to keep the clean and simple look, with just a bit of shine with CTMH glitter paper and one perfectly placed sparkle.

What about you? Does most of your artwork have inked edges, or do you prefer the clean look? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Halloween House and Scrapbook

Halloween SB closeup

Boo! It’s a little late for Halloween, but I just had to share my latest creation. I wanted to make something special as a baby gift for my talented boss and make-up genius at Scarywood Haunted Nights. He’s expecting a baby girl next year, his first child, so I created a Halloween House with a mini scrapbook for her first five Halloweens.

Halloween House-001

I used the discontinued paper pack, Mischief by Close to My Heart, and added a few brighter colors like Gypsy and Pear for a more playful color scheme. The paper mache house is from a craft store and I used a combination of Mod Podge and assorted glues to attach the papers.

To give the house a whimsical feel, I hand cut the black window frames without a ruler, and attached the shutters crookedly (not recommended for perfectionist types). The shutters are small strips of Smokey Plum cardstock, dry embossed with an embossing stylus and sanded to reveal the CTMH white core cardstock.

Behind the windows I placed vellum and included a small battery-operated candle so you can use the house as a d├ęcor item. I purposely left one window open on each side so the little one can peek inside and play with the house.

The roof of the house lifts off and inside you find this mini scrapbook. The size is about 5” tall by 6” wide, so it’s perfect for small hands and single photos.

I’m proud to say that the gift was well-received and even brought a bit of misty-eyed appreciation to a big, tough guy who makes hideous monsters for a living.

Always Grateful

Monday, November 4, 2013

After a busy Halloween season that lasts from early September to the first week of November, I’m grateful for the extra time I will be able to spend on crafting and creating.

Crea

I’ve been a busy bee with not one but two halloween “jobs” this year. I’ve been working as a makeup artist for Scarywood theme park, plus I still kept my position as Creative Director for our large scale middle school haunted house. Lots of crazy scheduling for my family, but I loved every minute of it.

I am also thankful for you, dear reader. For sticking with me as my blog and online activity has been very spotty, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
