What’s the Word?

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

Happy new year! Are you making resolutions and goals for the upcoming year? I always do, and they’re usually the same ol’ thing – exercise more, eat less, spend less time online, blah blah blah.

I love the idea of choosing One Little Word to define and guide you through your year. The incredibly talented scrapbook and design guru, Ali Edwards, is the genius behind the One Little Word movement.

I have adopted a single word in years past, but last year I didn’t. Looking back at 2013, I found myself learning, growing, and taking care of family and self. I strived to step back and take stock of what’s important. I took some time to explore some new passions and pursuits. I didn’t have an official word of 2013, but I would say that “Release” was my defining word for the past year. I let go of a lot of expectations and commitments, and feel lighter because of it.

Now it’s 2014, a brand new shiny year full of possibilities. I’ve already chosen my word for this year….

Engage

I love this word so much. It’s an active word, it’s outgoing, it speaks of stepping forward and being present. After looking inward for a while, I feel excited to try some daring choices and make new connections.

Engage is a word with many definitions in the dictionary. Here are a few of my favorite entries:

to get and keep (someone's attention, interest, etc.)

to offer (as one's word) as security for a debt or cause

to bring together or interlock

to bind (as oneself) to do something

to provide occupation for (involve)

to induce to participate

to deal with especially at length

Now it’s your turn! Leave a comment below and tell me what word you would choose for 2014. I hope you’ve found this post engaging!

It looks like this year will be Thrive for me. This is my 6th year to choose "one little word" and it is so much better for me than 'resolutions'. I'm excited to see what 2014 brings me, but I know that I have the ability to thrive, rather than just exist.

I think my word this year will be Service/Serve. I have done a lot of sitting and watching this year because of health issues and this year I want to serve more. I will be participating in Operation Write Home and getting my house cleaner and organized (my hubby wants it badly).
